Rubin Kodheli/Blues in Space | DAF Sidewalk Series

Saturday 9/25, 4pm, Buzzito’s at Fulton Landing

Come on out for Rubin Kodheli‘s avant rock group, Blues in Space.

Rubin Kodheli was born and raised in Tirane, Albania.  At the age of 7 Rubin began his music studies on the cello. He quickly gained attention as a prodigious talent. He continued his education in Belgium and Germany, eventually landing in New York to attend the Juilliard School of Music.

During his studies at Juilliard he became more and more interested in collaborations between dance, theater and music. It was at this time that he first began his exploration of composition.  Most recently, Kodheli composed additional music for the feature film Precious, directed by Lee Daniels.  His piece Desert Man was featured in the Documentary film Third Wave based on the 2004 Tsunami which decimated Sri Lanka. Kodheli also composed the score for the dance film Becoming, winner of the Best Experimental Prize at the Miami Short Film Festival. On television, his music has been featured in the HBO series True Blood.

Yellow Birds/Sam Cohen|DAF Sidewalk Series

Sunday 9/26, 2pm, Jay Street & York St

Yellowbirds is the moniker for the latest musical exploits of Sam Cohen (guitarist / songwriter / vocalist in the psychedelic collective Apollo Sunshine).  Cohen grew up in Houston, Texas, and while the Texas of his teens may have been home to Big Oil, Enron, the Bush family, and the drab grey Astros jerseys of the 90′s, he prefers to think of it as the Texas of yore- home to Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, the Space Program, and rainbow orange Astros jerseys.  It stands to reason, then, that his current home of New York City must be the mythical Empire City: Rocky Mountains of architecture, epicenter of modern art, home to Charles Mingus and The Velvet Underground.

It was with these timeless inspirations in mind that Cohen created The Color by Yellowbirds, his “solo” debut due out in early 2011.  Double-speed auto-harp glissandos, glowing backwards pedal-steel, bubbling echo and fuzz guitars coalesce into a warm wall of sound.  As existential lyrical themes emerge, delivered nonchalantly over psyched-out aural landscapes, the picture emerges of a dust-blown, 4th dimensional Future West.  This is Cohen’s quixotic world where “only the purist tones can be heard.”

Yellowbirds will release its first track “The Rest Of My Life” as a digital exclusive single on October 12 on Brooklyn indie record label, The Royal Potato Family.

Kohane of Newark (Alt Jewish Rock):

Sunday 9/26

6pm: Front St Pizza @ Washington St (Rain Plan: Tented)

“Jewish or not, ‘New Midlife Crisis’ would have marked the arrival – however late in midlife it is – of a significant new voice on the contemporary music scene. The fact that it gains heft and impact through its rootedness in a life and legacy with ancient spiritual and historical roots just makes it all the more transcendent music for the ages, for all ages.” Seth Rogovoy (editor-in-chief of Berkshire Living Magazine and the author of The Essential Klezmer: A Music Lover’s Guide to Jewish Roots and Soul Music. His book, BOB DYLAN: Prophet, Mystic, Poet, was recently published by Scribner)

“An American Serge Gainsbourg, Kohane of Newark’s NEW MIDLIFE CRISIS probes the dark, sensitive heart of the Jewish experience. Equal parts Lou Reed/Alexander Portnoy/Jonathan Richman/Delmore Schwartz the result is late-night therapy drenched in beautiful music.” Steven Lee Beeber (Author The Heebie Jeebies at CBGB’s: A Secret History of Jewish Punk)

“Killer Jew-Punk panopticon / horn ‘a plenty /musical manna from heaven courtesy Kohane of Newark and a cast of thou–nice touches from Avram Pengas, Deerfrance, Ficca, Lloyd, and Ribot, and much much more.”
Gary Lucas, Guitarist extraordinaire, composer, producer (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley, Chris Cornell)

A “…cholent of angst and wisdom……a full-fledged, lovingly crafted alternative rock operetta, infused with spicy Oriental musical flavors as vibrant as traditional Bukharan robes.” The Forward , Review by Uzi Silber
