The Dumbo Arts Festival is pleased to announce the participation of Leonard Ursachi:

For the festival, Ursachi will be exhibiting two works. One piece will be a video projection documenting the installation pendulums that have stopped marking time . . . at One Main Sculpture Space, a raw art venue that existed on the ground floor of One Main Street in the 80′s and 90′s. Near the projection, three of the original pendulums will be presented.

The second installation is entitled Rise and Shine, which is a current project inspired by the submersion of a populated island in Romania. Rise and Shine is an oval “aquarium” that contains a six-foot-long, translucent acrylic model of an island, and rests on a rusted steel base. The island, lit from below, is alternately drowned and resuscitated as water repeatedly rises and falls. Its form is based on the island Ada-Kaleh, submerged by Romania’s Ceaucescu decades ago for a hydro-electric project. Rise and Shine evokes every town and city that has similarly vanished under water, intentionally drowned, like the Catskill’s Neversink and Bittersweet, towns flooded in 1941 to create the Neversink Reservoir. Rise and Shine addresses myriad issues—loss of home, erasure of culture, the social and environmental impact of energy choices—while evoking the mythic deluge from Atlantis to Noah’s Ark and beyond, and channeling international ghosts.
